FH Workshop Academy

Within the framework of the fh4Schools program, the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol (FH Kufstein Tirol) operates its FH Workshop Academy for high school students (minimum age: 15 years). The aim of the academy is to offer contemporary, exciting, and useful content to students in a workshop format. The workshops put an emphasis on hands-on work and practical applicability.

As part of these half-day or full-day workshops, young people gain comprehensive and engaging insights into selected subject areas covered by the Bachelor’s degree programs at FH Kufstein Tirol.

The FH Workshop Academy’s offers are a free service to encourage networking and cooperation with local schools and to establish broader access to our resources. At its core, it is about sharing knowledge and providing insights into academic life.

  • Can be integrated into school project weeks or booked as stand-alone events
  • You will be supplied with additional content and materials (with a focus on practical application) to interlace the workshops with your students’ curriculum.
  • Focus on personal development of students, encouraging a can-do attitude and honing the following skills: creativity, developing a keen eye for analysis, understanding processes, critical awareness and safety in the digital world.
  • Low-threshold learning and familiarization with contemporary professional roles and fields of work in tailor-made laboratory environments.
  • Workshops include certificates of participation, catering during breaks, and a transport allowance for distances to Kufstein of more than 20 km.
  • Covid-19 safety precautions at the highest level.

Workshop 1

USABILITY LAB – Finde den Fehler: Find the bug: Usability on the test bench

Duration:

2 hours

Group size:

max. 30 participants (breakout activities of 4 participants each)

Scope:

The students collaborate in small groups to test the usability of a software application, website, or product (e.g., the Ikaros flight simulator). Each participant takes on the roles of both user and tester. To measure usability, students employ the System Usability Score (SUS). Participants first work on this score with the help of the instructor. The results are then compared and discussed with further expert input. In the final step, the students develop improvements to the application, website, or product using the design thinking method, a method that helps to find new, creative solutions.

Aims:

After the workshop, students will be familiar with the concepts of usability and user guidance, as well as with a specific tool (SUS) to make usability measurable. The students will be able to use this tool in a guided manner and to develop structured improvements of a concrete product with the help of design thinking.

 

Workshop 2

WEB SECURITY LAB – How (un)secure is the World Wide Web?

Duration:

4 hours

Group size:

max. 30 participants (breakout activities of 4 participants each)

Scope:

In this workshop, students explore the topic of web security with the help of the instructor. They learn about techniques that modern websites use to observe and influence the behavior of users (e.g., web tracking technologies, fingerprinting, smart calls to action, recommender systems, etc.). In small groups, the students then analyze their own online presence with regard to privacy and learn about methods and tools they can use to better protect themselves in the online world.

Aims:

Participants learn to understand the concept of privacy and the techniques that modern websites use to circumvent privacy protections. They can analyze websites in terms of privacy and are familiar with methods and tools to protect themselves against privacy attacks.

Workshop 1

MAKERS LAB – "Just make it": From design to finished product

Duration:

4 hours

Group size:

max. 15 participants

Scope:

It has never been easier to create something new than it is today. In the Makers Lab of the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, new products can be created quickly and easily, and they can be completely customized. In our ‘Just make it’ workshop, instructors show how this can be done. Participating students learn how to sketch design ideas by hand and how to represent them using a simple drawing program. These drawings are then transferred to the available milling machines, 3D printers, and laser cutters. The laser, for instance, allows objects to be both cut and engraved. In this way, the participants can implement their ideas in the shortest possible time and create a new product.

Aims:

The students can sketch their own ideas by hand and map them using a drawing program. They can also operate milling machines, 3D printers, and laser cutters to implement their ideas and to develop new products.

 

Workshop 2

PROCESS LAB – Play process detective and follow the leads to efficiency and digitization

Duration:

4 hours

Group size:

max. 20 participants

Scope:

Our organizations must become more efficient and more digital. As process detectives, the students explore the production laboratory at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol and look for waste and optimization potential in operational processes. Together with their team, they eliminate inefficiencies and find solutions to improve a company. In addition, participants learn about IT systems that can be used to digitize manual factories. Together, they produce a physical product in the new factory that they can take home as a giveaway.

Aims:

The students will be able to evaluate processes in terms of their efficiency and degree of digitization, and they can develop and implement solutions to increase efficiency.
