Our workshop offering for schools

 

Within the framework of the fh4Schools programme, the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol (FH Kufstein Tirol) operates its FH Workshop Academy for high school students (minimum age: 15 years). The aim of the academy is to offer contemporary, exciting, and useful content to students in a workshop format. The workshops put an emphasis on hands-on work and practical applicability.

As part of these half-day or full-day workshops, young people gain comprehensive and engaging insights into selected subject areas covered by the Bachelor’s degree programmes at FH Kufstein Tirol.

Digitalisation

Students learn to examine, measure and creatively improve usability.

Duration

Content

The students work together in small groups to test the usability of an application, website or product (e.g. Ikaros). Each team member tests the perspective of the user and the person testing. To measure usability, they use the System Usability Score (SUS). The students first work on this score with the workshop leader. Afterwards, the results are compared and discussed together under supervision. In the final step, the students develop improvements to the application, website or product using the design thinking method (a method that helps to find new creative solutions).

Goal

After the workshop the students know the concept of usability and the tool (SUS) to make usability measurable. The students are able to use this tool under guidance and can develop structured improvements to a concrete product with the help of design thinking.

Students learn about security and observation tools and how to protect themselves.

Content

In the workshop, the students work together with the workshop leader on the topic of web security. They will learn about techniques that modern websites use to observe and influence the behaviour of users (e.g. web tracking technologies, fingerprinting, smart calls to action, recommender systems, etc.). Afterwards, the students will analyse their personal internet presence in small groups with regard to privacy and learn methods and tools to better protect themselves on the internet.

Goal

The students know the concept of privacy and the techniques that modern websites use to circumvent privacy protection. They can analyse websites in terms of privacy and know methods and tools to protect themselves against privacy attacks.

Pupils learn to digitise their own sketches and to realise them using modern equipment (laser cutter, 3D printer or milling machine).

Content

It has never been easier than today to create something new. In the Makers Lab at the FH Kufstein Tirol, new products are created quickly and easily that can be completely customised. In the workshop "Just make it", the workshop leaders show how this is possible. The students learn to sketch out design ideas by hand and then to represent them with a simple drawing programme. This is then transferred to the milling machines, 3D printers and laser cutters. With the laser, the objects can be cut and also engraved. In this way, the students can realise their idea in a very short time and create a new product.

Goal

The pupils can sketch their own ideas by hand and map them in a drawing programme. They can also operate milling machines, 3D printers and laser cutters to implement their ideas and develop new products.

Students develop an understanding of processes and creative improvement measures.

Content

Our organisations need to become more efficient and digital. As process detectives, the students explore the production laboratory of the FH Kufstein Tirol and look for waste and optimisation potential in operational processes. Together with their team, they eliminate inefficiencies and find solutions to improve the company. In addition, the students learn about IT systems with which they can digitalise the manual factory. Together they produce a physical product in the new factory that they can take home as a give-away.

Goal

The students can evaluate processes for their efficiency and the degree of digitalisation and work out and implement solutions to increase efficiency.

Pupils gain an initial insight into the dynamics of digitalisation using concrete examples. Opportunities and advantages, but also dangers and disadvantages, are critically reflected upon.

Content

The students learn about digitalisation and how it changes not only the economy (companies, customers...) but also society. Concrete examples are used to discuss applications and future solutions. It is not about (IT) technical questions of digitalisation, but about concrete effects and the change of markets or social developments. For example, it will be shown why the city of Kufstein is suddenly becoming a competitor of VW and what the shortage of kitchen staff has to do with digitalisation.

Goal

The students get a first insight into the dynamics of digitalisation by means of concrete examples. The opportunities and advantages of digitalisation are addressed, but at the same time the dangers and disadvantages are critically reflected upon.

Students learn how XR technologies work and can try them out themselves.

The students work in small groups to test various virtual and augmented reality applications. Each team member learns about the differences and how applications must be designed so that they appeal to users and are fun to use. Afterwards, the students develop their own simple XR application.

Goal

The students are familiar with different technologies in the field of extended reality and know what factors make an XR application good as well as what role they could play in the future.

Sustainability

With the help of a simulator, students discover how certain influences will affect climate development up to the year 2100.

Content

En-ROADS is a simulator that allows you to design scenarios to limit global warming. It runs on a Smart Desk, which is a table with a touchscreen embedded in it. With the help of 18 "levers", it is possible to specifically influence the climate development up to the year 2100 and to observe its effects online. The task of the groups in a role-playing game is to evaluate the levers (e.g. taxation of CO2 emissions, etc.) and to measure them in such a way that global warming can be limited. Graphs illustrate the effects of climate change and compare the results of the simulator with scientific study results.

Goal

The causality of physical and technical processes, aspects of environmental justice and the effects on health and lifestyles can be addressed, discussed and deepened. The discussion situation at the Smart Table and in the group work is a low-threshold offer for the exchange of ideas.

The topic of sustainability is complex and often not tangible. Together we will look at the term sustainability and its different aspects (economic, ecological, social). As sustainability ninjas, we do not want to leave any imprints on the planet. Therefore, we will discuss the questions "How big is your own CO2 footprint?" and "What can every single person do to actively shape a sustainable future? Finally, as a team challenge, there will be the opportunity to put the knowledge acquired to the test in the sustainability quiz.

Goal

The aim is to familiarise pupils with the complex topic of sustainability. While on the one hand the complex global interrelationships are explained, on the other hand there are additional tangible approaches to take a step further towards sustainability. Because only together can we change something!

Economy

Pupils slip into a role play in which they learn how to deal with real estate portfolios, the opportunities and risks involved and the first rough key figures.

The students take on the role of a real estate investor in a business game. In the group, they play and simulate purchases and sales of selected real estate over a period of time. In this way, the students learn about the key figures that are relevant for investments. In addition to purchases and sales, optimisations through renovations or refurbishments can also be considered as scenarios.

Goal

The aim of the game is to learn how to deal with real estate portfolios, the opportunities and the risks, and to get to know the first rough key figures.

Pupils acquire basic skills in financial mathematics, markets and monetary policy in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of buying a property.

Content

Owning a home is part of many people's fixed life plans. But is it really always the better decision to buy a property instead of simply renting? In the workshop, the participants will deal with this question on the basis of terms such as equity, interest rates, maintenance costs, etc. The workshop will be followed by a general discussion and explanation of terms. After a general discussion and explanation of terms, the participants will jointly examine a purchase situation with the help of an Excel file. In this way, the participants gain insight into essential decision-making criteria and can implement financial analyses autonomously.

Goal

The students acquire elementary competences from financial mathematics in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of a real estate purchase. In addition, basic knowledge from areas such as monetary policy and financial markets is imparted, which are closely related to the decision-making situation under consideration.

Students will explore the concept of culture in a business management context and how it affects behavioral practices. They will learn to use existing online tools to understand their own culture and how to examine and compare it to others.

Scope

Why do people from different places do different things? This workshop is about introducing students to the fundamental concepts in the field of cross-cultural management.  Students will learn about the concept of culture itself in the business management context, with a main focus on national cultures.  They will learn about cultural dimensions theory while exploring the Hofstede’s National Cultural Dimensions framework.  With this understanding, they will learn to analyze, describe, and compare various cultures and see how differences affect actions and behavior. 

Aims

Participants will learn to understand the concept of culture in a business management context and how it affects behavioral practices.  They will learn to use existing online tools to understand their own culture and how to examine and compare it to others. 

How can one estimate as well as possible what the further share price trend might be? When is the right time to buy and/or sell?

The development of share prices and especially their future prognosis still pose great challenges to investors. How can one estimate as well as possible what the future course of the share price might be? When is the right time to buy and/or sell shares? One possible approach is technical chart analysis, which can be used to make price forecasts through simple pattern recognition. In the workshops, the chart technique and selected indicators will be presented and discussed using a wide variety of practical examples.

Goal

The students

  • know the difference between fundamental analysis and technical chart analysis of shares,
  • can independently apply and interpret simple pattern recognition of technical chart analysis and
  • can apply selected trend indicators and interpret their significance in comparison to a share price trend.

In this interactive workshop, we will work out what is needed to recognise and evaluate start-up ideas and how to go about developing viable and sustainable business models.

In an interactive workshop, we will work out what it takes to recognise and evaluate start-up ideas and how to go about developing viable and sustainable business models. How can you successfully develop(e) new products and services in a team using creativity techniques? Does your idea have the potential to create real value for customers? And do you have the potential to be a start-up entrepreneur?

Goal

After the workshop, the students know the basics of a business model and are able to use creativity and analysis tools in a meaningful way. The first innovative business models are developed together.
