Taste Digitalization – CAMPUS:digi:TOUR (2) makes a stop in Kufstein

At the event held on 06/14/2018, about 60 guests received information about the competences of FH Kufstein Tirol in the area of digitization. The event in Kufstein was the second of four stops in the event series.

CAMPUS:digi:TOUR is an event series within the context of the digitization offensive of the province of Tirol, initiated by IV Tirol and directed at Tirolean companies that are active in or have dedicated themselves to the field of digitization. For the second event held on 06/14/2018, FH Kufstein Tirol provided an overview of its expertise and information about possible collaboration in order to further advance the topic of digitization.

FH President Prof. (FH) PD Dr. Mario Döller welcomed about 60 guests to the ceremonial hall. “Our scientists work on essential digitization competences. Cooperation with partners from industry provides consistent and important elements for our activities in the areas of research and development,” stated Döller. He informed the visitors in which areas the polytechnic with its students and researchers provides support. In his keynote speech, Roman Stöger presented current and regional examples of successful company transformations. Subsequently, five experts presented their research areas.

Presentations from near and augmented reality to digitized products and value chains

Asc. Prof. (FH) Mag. (FH) Hans-Peter Steinbacher, MA is the instructional designer of the eLearning Center of the polytechnic and deals with the topic of Smart Education. Digital competences are necessary preconditions in society as well as on the labor market, according to Steinbacher. He introduced the project “Smart Factories – Connected Learning”, which creates innovative learning arrangements with a realistic, networked learning environment for new technologies in order to prepare employees for the challenges of digitization. 

The presentation by Prof. (FH) DI Dr. Martin Adam, Director of Studies ERP Systems & Business Process Management dealt with topics ranging from augmented to virtual reality. Assistance systems based on virtual and augmented reality are increasingly demanded in many areas of industry.

Director of Studies of the new master degree program Smart Products & Solutions, Asc. Prof. (FH) Dr. Peter Affenzeller demonstrated the importance of product development and networking in digital transformation based on examples. New or adapted products, services and business models are indispensable in order to keep pace with the market.

Prof. (FH) Dr. Koch David, Deputy Manager of the Institute for Facility Management & Real Estate Management introduced the project ImmoPixel. In two partial projects, ImmoAge and ImmBild, he and his team worked on the automatic assessment of real estate according to the building period and location by means of image recognition. 

The topic of blockchain technologies was addressed by Stefan Huber, MA, University Professor for Web Business & Technology and Web Communication & Information Systems. Technologies that have become known through digital currencies such as BITCOIN are the motor for the digitization of entire value chains.

Practical examples from research work at FH Kufstein

FH Kufstein Tirol offers itself to companies as a digitization partner in order to handle the challenges associated with digitization. The polytechnic competently supports regional as well as international SME and large-scale companies in coping with the frantic speed of digital transformation.

In a small exhibition, the polytechnic presented selected examples for demonstration purposes. At a bending station, the guests could test an augmented reality application with a HoloLens. The project ViSIT presented an example of virtual reality in which artifacts of the Kufstein Fortress and Veste Oberhaus near Passau were digitized and networked for museum visitors.

The guests at Kufstein also tested another VR application in combination with a fitness device. ICAROS is the fitness device of a Munich start-up with which users can exercise while virtually flying over various landscapes. The device can be moved along two axes by shifting one’s weight as VR goggles give the user the sensation of, e.g., flying over the Alps.

Further exhibits included the two humanoid robots NAO and Pepper, the digital twin of a mountain bike as well as an autonomously driving Mars rover, which was developed by students.
