Learning outcomes of course unit

Students are able to:
 differentiate fundamental functioning between power generating machinery and work
machines, give examples and identify the important application areas.
 identify the fundamental structure of machines and plants, categorise fundamen-tal
interpretations, if necessary calculate, and identify the strengths and weak-nesses of the
 analyse and assess practical examples.
 know companies from the machine and plant construction industry.

course contents

 Power generating machinery and work machines, classification and history
 Hydroelectric power plants: low-pressure, medium-pressure and high-pressure plants,
hydroelectric machines
 Pumps: positive displacement pumps, centrifugal pumps and vacuum pumps, pumping plants
 Thermal plants: steam generator, steam turbines and gas turbines, different de-signs of
power plants
 Compressor: compressor with positive displacement effect, turbo compressor
 Combustion engines: two-stroke and four-stroke principle, petrol engines and die-sel engines
 Material handling facilities: lifting machines (winches, cranes, hoists), continuous conveyors and floor conveyors
