Students know the methods of empirical social research, their strengths, weaknesses and areas of application. They have the expertise to analyze data correctly and evaluate it. They can also draft their own complex research work in a methodically correct manner.

The course deepens the knowledge of the rules of academic work and serves as the formal and methodological preparation of the students for working out the master's thesis. The scientific methodology of a master's thesis is discussed and scrutinized as well as advice on the formal design of the master’s thesis is offered. In particular, possible research questions and hypotheses are discussed intensively in order to create the basis for a promising exposé and master's thesis.
