Smart Energies

The research area Smart Energies is dedicated to integrating decentralized energy technologies with new business models based on marketing that utilizes digital tools. The development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications is accelerated through the Europe-wide introduction of smart meters in accordance with the EU directive. The research area works closely with the industry in the region.

Research in the area of renewable energies begins with the examination and evaluation of new resources by means of the project “Erl Wind”, funded by the Tirolean Science Fund. The project makes it possible to, for the first time, acquire valid data over a longer period of time for a well-known wind phenomenon in the Tirolean lowlands. It also provides a performance evaluation of photovoltaics facilities at high alpine altitudes and ultimately concludes with the development of methods for facility dimensioning with internal consumption usage, specifically for commercial usage.

The research area develops innovative electricity rates, examines the informational flow among regional market participants in a smart grid and evaluates models for the economic usage of communal electricity production facilities (research endeavor “tirol.energie.digital” in the preparation phase). The associated laboratory “IOT of Energy” is also being established, which serves as a virtual environment for the new digital and regionally designed electricity markets. Internal production facilities “Smartflower Pop” and decentralized facilities in the nearby area are integrated online.
