Institute For Sport & Sustainable Development

Welcome to the Institute for Sport & Sustainable Development. We combine a passion for sport with environmental and social responsibility. We research, teach and advocate for sustainable sport.

About Us

Sport can be a powerful driver of positive change in our society. The Institute for Sport & Sustainable Development (ISSD) explores the diverse interactions between sport and sustainability from a social science and management perspective. We examine both the positive effects of sport on social integration, health, and environmental awareness, as well as the challenges of sustainable sports management in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our Guiding Principles

We aim to strengthen the role and significance of sport and physical activity at both regional and European levels – with a particular focus on health and sustainable development. Central to our approach are transdisciplinary research, educational projects, and active exchange between academia, practice, and society.

Our goal is to take a leading role in the field of research and application at the intersection of sport and sustainability. We develop practical solutions and disseminate scientific knowledge through publications, projects, and collaborations – always in close connection with societal actors and academic discourse.

We investigate how sport can promote social inclusion, health, environmental protection and economic development and develop strategies to maximize these positive effects.
