Frequently Asked Questions

University of Applied Sciences or University - what's the difference?

Universities of applied sciences (UAS) provide practice-oriented degree programs in technical, economic, or social fields, whereas universities emphasise research and academic pursuits.

UAS typically require entrance exams and interviews for admission. In contrast, universities do not have a standard application or entrance test but instead have an introductory and orientation phase (STEOP).

Tuition fees at UAS are approximately Euro 363.36 per semester, plus a contribution to the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH). Although universities can technically charge tuition fees, these fees are often waived for Austrian and EU citizens.

Is the FH Kufstein Tirol a state-recognized higher education institution?

Yes, the FH Kufstein Tirol is institutionally accredited by AQ Austria (Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria) in accordance with § 22 FHG and § 19 HS-QSG and has been accredited for an unlimited period of time in accordance with §23 HS-QSG (Higher Education Quality Assurance Act) since 2012.

Due to its permanent accreditation, the FH Kufstein Tirol is legally obliged to carry out a quality audit every seven years. The second audit was successfully completed in summer 2023.

The positive quality audit confirms that the University of Applied Sciences has a functioning institutional quality management system and has set it up in accordance with legal requirements (Section 22 HS-QSG). In addition, the quality audit also supports the University of Applied Sciences in the further development of its internal quality management.

What is a Bachelor's degree program and how long does it take in Austria?

A bachelor's degree is an undergraduate higher education program that is the first academic degree obtained after completing secondary school or an equivalent qualification. It offers a comprehensive and well-founded education in a specific subject area and prepares students either for direct entry into a career or for further study programmes such as a Master's degree.

What is a Master's degree program and how long does it take in Austria?

A Master's degree program is an advanced academic pursuit undertaken after obtaining a Bachelor's degree. It serves to enhance expertise within a specific field and allows for specialization. Master's programs often emphasize research and are designed to equip students for careers in academia, research, or various industries. In Austria, a typical Master's degree program spans one to two years, equivalent to two to four semesters.

What does it mean to study part-time?

Studying part-time allows you to work alongside your studies. However, work is not a must. Lessons take place on Fridays or Saturdays, so that work and study or family life and study are compatible.
