Table tennis is more than just a leisure activity: it promotes exercise, fitness, mental well-being, and social participation - for people of all ages, genders, and fitness levels.
The Institute for Sport and Sustainable Development is participating in an international project run by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Together, scientific findings are being translated into practical measures in order to achieve impact and inspire others.
The Institute for Sports and Sustainable Development at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol is participating in an international project organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) after successfully participating in an open call for proposals in September 2025 and winning the selection process. The Strategic Plan 2023 laid the foundation for promoting the central themes of health and well-being worldwide in 2026 - 2027. On this basis, the institute is contributing its scientific expertise and is playing a key role in the development of a handbook that brings together evidence-based findings on the health effects of table tennis and translates them into practical tools to support stakeholders in implementing effective and inclusive measures.
HEALTHY AND ACTIVE WITH TABLE TENNIS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE
Health and well-being are universal human rights. With this new handbook, the ITTF Foundation aims to contribute to building resilient, healthy, and inclusive communities worldwide. It is aimed at ITTF member associations, World Table Tennis Day promoters, coaches, clubs, and organizations working in the field of sport for development.
The content is based on a rapid evidence analysis that summarizes scientific findings on the health effects of table tennis. This is supplemented by interviews with international stakeholders to take into account practical knowledge, experiences, and success factors from different regions. The handbook thus provides evidence-based recommendations on how table tennis activities can be specifically designed to promote health.
HOW DOES TABLE TENNIS IMPROVE OUR HEALTH?
Research shows that table tennis is much more than just a recreational sport. It offers low-threshold and versatile opportunities to increase physical activity, improve fitness, strengthen mental well-being, and promote social inclusion - regardless of age, gender, physical limitations, or fitness level. The project investigates the conditions and educational and training approaches necessary to maximize the health-promoting potential of table tennis.
A first version of the handbook is planned for February 2026 and will contain specific recommendations for coaches, clubs, and organizations.
