Visitors to the Open House at the Kufstein University were not only given guided tours of the building and laboratories, but also taster lectures and workshops.
For the second time this year, the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol gave interested parties the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes. The program included guided tours of the building, laboratory visits, course presentations and taster lectures.
On Saturday, March 18, 2023, the Kufstein University opened its doors for the second time this year to give interested parties an insight into everyday student life. Numerous visitors took up this offer and explored the campus in Kufstein from 10:00 to 13:00 - including a fabulous view of the Kufstein Fortress. The program included not only tours of the building, laboratory visits and taster lectures, but also individual discussions with current students, staff at the higher education institution and general lectures on studying in Kufstein.
GUIDED TOUR THROUGH ALL PARTS OF THE BUILDING
The guided tours of the building and the laboratory tours in particular met with great interest on this open day. Visitors were able to gain a first impression of the campus in just under half an hour. It all started in the auditorium, the central meeting point at the University of Applied Sciences. There is room for 350 people (seated) and if you take a closer look at the walls, you will find quotes in various languages - from Gertrude Stein to Honoré de Balzac and Mahatma Gandhi - which reflect the internationality of the Kufstein University and its intellectual spirit.
We continued to the second floor via the gallery into building section A to the kubi - Kufstein Library for Science & Leisure. The city library and the scientific library of the Kufstein University were merged in the newest wing of the campus. The kubi is therefore not only available to students, but also to the residents of Kufstein. The staircase opposite the main entrance to the kubi led the group to the laboratories in building section A, the Automation Lab, the Web Lab and the Lean Lab. The special feature here: all the walls between the individual rooms can be opened, moved and described, thus allowing the greatest possible flexibility. The last stop in this part of the building was the roof terrace with the adjoining seminar room, from where you could enjoy a magnificent view of the newly designed Kufstein city park and the fortress.
DINER AND CAFÉ CATER FOR THE STUDENTS
The tour continued in Building B - more specifically in the EFIM Lab, the newly designed laboratory for the Energy & Sustainability Management and Facility & Real Estate Management degree programs. This is where the building materials collection and the model of a residential ventilation system are housed. On the second floor, the path leads past the computer lecture halls and down the staircase to the first floor to the “Festsaal” (Festivities Hall). This can be used as a gym, lecture room or event venue and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Not only do lectures and conferences take place in the large room, the FH Sport also holds its evening program there. We made our way back through the Brown Study towards the auditorium - but not before stopping off at the Makers Lab. The lab is open to all students who are interested in building their own prototypes using 3D printers and laser cutters in order to realize ideas in small series. Back at the starting point, the participants of the tour took a quick look at the diner and café, which caters for students and staff at Kufstein University from Monday to Saturday.
PERSONAL ADVICE ON THE STUDY PROGRAMS
In addition to the guided tours, interested parties were able to talk to current students about the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at the University of Applied Sciences at numerous stands in the auditorium. However, there were not only people available to talk to about degree program-specific topics: Anyone who wanted to find out more about the 215 international partner universities and the semester abroad that is compulsory for full-time Bachelor's students could also find the right person to talk to at the Open House. Visitors were also able to find out about the numerous services offered by the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) - the Austrian higher education institution. The legal representation of student interests at the Kufstein University is the point of contact for problems in everyday student life and also organizes a varied sports, cultural and leisure program for all students.
TASTER LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS
During the course presentations, taster lectures and workshops, which took place several times a day, visitors were able to get a first impression of their desired course of study or get to know completely new subject areas and be inspired. Anyone interested in studying for a Master's degree or studying part-time could also find extensive information material in the form of the Master Lounge and additional lectures. The Master Lounge is offered exclusively for prospective Master's students as part of the Open House - the Directors of Studies answer individual questions on the topic in a personal setting. In the supplementary lecture “Successful part-time study”, participants also learned first-hand how to perfectly organize their degree program and career. Of particular interest to many: studying part-time at the FH Kufstein Tirol does not require a permanent employer. The term “part-time” simply refers to a form of study in which lectures and seminars take place on Fridays and Saturdays.
