In mid-June 2025, the fireside chats for the bachelor's and master's degree programs in Facility & Real Estate Management and Energy & Sustainability Management at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol took place. The online format offered students a platform to exchange ideas and combine theory and practice.

The focus of the evening was on the future of artificial intelligence (AI). Prof. (FH) Dr. Miroslav Despotovic, MA, Professor of Information Systems for Energy and Real Estate Management, moderated the online event via Microsoft Teams and guided the audience through the evening.

The invited guest was Markus M. Kirchmair, FRSA. He is the author of the book AI Act Competence+Compliance and is a recognized expert on regulatory and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence.

AI IN PRACTICE: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND CRITICAL ISSUES

In his virtual lecture, Markus M. Kirchmair gave students exciting insights into his field of expertise and shared his knowledge directly with them, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of the technology. He particularly emphasized key statements from his book AI Act Competence+Compliance: AI is on the rise, and in Industry 5.0, it will have an even greater impact on our everyday lives and the world of work.

The topic proved to be of great interest. Participants engaged in lively and enthusiastic discussions, resulting in a valuable exchange of expertise and a deeper understanding of regulatory and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence.

The students took advantage of the opportunity to ask questions. The topic of data protection became a focal point. Kirchmair pointed out that this is a current problem that requires awareness and responsibility: once user data has been fed into AI algorithms, it can no longer be deleted.

The feedback was consistently positive: students were able to experience firsthand how exciting but also challenging working with artificial intelligence can be, and how important it is to maintain a critical view of the opportunities and challenges involved.
