The Liebherr plant in Telfs wants to become climate neutral. Students of the Master's program in Energy & Sustainability Management show possibilities and potential for this path by means of a CO2 balance.
The Liebherr plant in Telfs produces construction machines with hydrostatic drives and employs approximately 800 workers on a total plant area of almost 180,000 square meters. As part of a practical project, master's students, together with Tobias Apperl (Liebherr Telfs) and supervisor Dr. Miriam Lettner (Kufstein University), developed a CO2 balance and, based on this, created a decarbonization roadmap for the Telfs site.
CARBON FOOTPRINT AND COMPANY-OWN CARBON FOOTPRINT
To determine the current greenhouse gas emissions of the production site, the team first created a carbon footprint for scopes 1 and 2 (direct and indirect sources of emissions). This provides information on how many emissions are produced in which area. This includes, for example, energy consumption (electricity and gas), the transport of products, but also employees and fugitive emissions. “With a carbon footprint, the Telfs plant is able to analyze the quantity and origin of Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions. The roadmap and climate protection measures derived from this enable us to take the first steps towards improvement,” Tobias Apperl sums up. The next step was to derive climate protection measures based on the carbon footprint.
CLIMATE PROTECTION MEASURES IN STEEL PROCESSING
These include, for example, demonstrating CO2 savings when switching to photovoltaic technology, the possible potential of a hydrogen electrolyzer to replace natural gas, and improving the thermal insulation in the production halls. These climate protection measures will enable Liebherr Telfs to reduce CO2 emissions and thus make a major contribution to climate neutrality. In the final step, the students developed a decarbonization roadmap with reduction targets.
Roadmap zur CO2-Neutralität für Liebherr Telfs
This roadmap shows possibilities and potentials for decarbonization. It offers Liebherr Telfs a possible roadmap for implementing a holistic solution. The carbon footprint and the derived climate protection measures serve as the basis for the decarbonization roadmap. Furthermore, the team determined the reduction targets for the coming years.
