As part of ongoing efforts to internationalize higher education, Associate Professor Mark Romanelli recently completed a mobility visit to the University of Ghana. The visit fostered new academic collaborations, promoted cultural exchange, and set the foundation for expanded Erasmus+ partnerships.
The University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol continues to advance its internationalization strategy through meaningful academic exchange. Associate Professor Mark Romanelli of the Sports, Culture & Event Management program recently completed a one-week visit to the University of Ghana in Accra. The visit, supported by Erasmus+ mobility funding, was hosted by the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies (PESS) in collaboration with the International Programmes Office (IPO).
The exchange was conducted as a Staff Mobility within the framework of the Erasmus+ KA171 project, which supports collaboration with partner countries outside the EU. The University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol aims to further strengthen and expand its engagement in KA171, both in the area of staff mobility and in promoting increased student mobility in both directions.
Academic leadership and global Engagement
During his stay, Prof. (FH) Romanelli led multiple academic sessions, including lectures on Globalization in Sport, Project Management as well as a student forum on international studies in Kufstein. He also held a hybrid classroom and online lecture titled Bidding Beyond the Game: The Legacies of Unsuccessful Sports Event Bids on Host Locations that drew participation from government and industry representatives, including the Ghana Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
A key highlight of the visit was the reinforcement of a reciprocal Erasmus+ exchange. For the first time, a student from the University of Ghana will travel to Kufstein for a study-abroad semester, marking a shift toward two-way mobility. Faculty exchanges are also being formalized to further deepen cooperation between the institutions.
Cultural bonding beyond the clasroom
Beyond the classroom, the visit included rich cultural immersion, with excursions to Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park, offering insights into Ghana's historical and natural heritage. These experiences not only enhanced cross-cultural understanding but also underscored the value of academic partnerships that extend beyond formal education.
Prof. (FH) Romanelli emphasized the importance of such collaborations: “International exchange is a key element of the strategies for both of our universities. This visit strengthened personal, professional and organizational connections and will facilitate new opportunities for both – students and faculty.”
The University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol looks forward to building on this partnership and expanding its network of global academic cooperation, especially in the areas of Sports, Culture, & Events Management.
