- Practical Project

Christian Lasta and Manfred Riepertinger of Egger Holzwerkstoffe GmbH & Co. KG together with the students and their supervisor Dr. Miriam Lettner on the excursion to the parent plant.
Students of the Master's program in Energy and Sustainability Management were given insights into the topics of sustainability and wood as a raw material as part of a course and a practical project.
The company Egger Holzwerkstoffe GmbH & Co. KG, based in St. Johann in Tyrol, employs around 10,000 people at 31 locations in eleven different countries. As part of a practical project, six students gained in-depth insights into sustainable product management and the certification process.
The project group developed certificates of origin, sustainability certificates, quality labels and recommendations for the Egger company in the areas of market approval and certification for the introduction of a CLT box.
By focusing on internationally recognized labels and standards, the team created a cross-market concept that enables Egger to achieve appropriate market labeling in all target markets with just a few labels and standards. The students were able to gain experience in launching a new, sustainable timber construction product, experience the complexity of product labeling and certification in practice, and present solutions for product labeling that is as transparent and simple as possible.
SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT IN PRACTICE
As part of the course on circular economy and bioeconomy, Elisabeth Pali, sustainability manager at Egger, provided insights into the opportunities and challenges of sustainability management in practice. After that, the students had the unique opportunity to visit the parent plant in St. Johann in Tyrol.
Christian Lasta (graduate of the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein) and Manfred Riepertinger showed the students around the company and demonstrated that wood and wood-based materials are versatile, robust and sustainable in an ecological sense. True to the company slogan “More from wood”, the two employees provided insights into the production of various wood-based materials.
Every year, the plant in St. Johann processes 600,000 tons of wood, which comes from a maximum radius of 150 km. In addition to the wood-based materials, district heating is produced at the site for the neighboring communities of Oberndorf and St. Johann. The excursion and the exchange with experts from the field once again showed the students the diverse possibilities of energy and sustainability management.
