Impact analysis: How is the Salzkammergut perceived?

As part of a practical project, students on the Sport, Culture & Event Management degree program evaluated the perception of the Salzkammergut region.
Six students from the part-time Master's degree course in Sport, Culture & Event Management at the Kufstein University cooperated with the Competence Center for Nonprofit Organizations and Social Entrepreneurship at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, which is conducting an impact analysis as an official evaluation of a European Capital of Culture (ECoC) for the first time. The Salzkammergut region was named European Capital of Culture for 2024. The aim of the students' practical project was to identify and partially measure the effects and perceptions of the ECoC. Visitors were surveyed on site using short questionnaires. A total of 198 people were approached, with 65 people refusing to take part in the survey.
RESULTS OF THE IMPACT ANALYSIS
The descriptive analysis showed that the majority of respondents were interested in culture and that the majority assessed the idea of the Capital of Culture as an excellent or good idea.
In terms of quality, opinions varied. Some participants found the mix of traditions and new concepts positive, while others felt that the focus on traditions and customs was lacking. Many of those surveyed stated that they were not sufficiently informed about the program.
These results from the impact analysis show that the Capital of Culture has left a variety of opinions and impressions. The practical project highlights the importance of comprehensive analysis to assess such large-scale cultural programs and offers valuable insights for future ECOC. The Competence Center for Nonprofit Organizations and Social Entrepreneurship at WU will conduct ongoing data collection and analysis with other cooperation partners. The project will conclude in 2025.
A YEAR FULL OF CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS
The program of the Capital of Culture Salzkammergut 2024 ends at the end of this year, but until then it still offers numerous events that are definitely worth a visit. It remains to be seen what lasting effects it will have on the region.
