Vanessa Huber, a graduate of Kufstein University, received the Thesis Award 2023 from the city of Kufstein for her outstanding master's thesis. The topic of her master's thesis is affordable housing in Austria using the example of Tyrol.
Vanessa Huber studied Facility & Real Estate Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Kufstein and wrote her master's thesis under the supervision of Prof. (FH) Dr. David Koch. The town of Kufstein presented the master's thesis with the Thesis Award as it dealt closely with the challenges, opportunities and development of Kufstein. The award ceremony took place on December 7, 2023 and brought the graduate - in addition to recognition - prize money in the amount of 2,000 euros.
ABOUT THE TOPIC OF THE MASTER THESIS
Affordability in the real estate industry is an issue with major implications that has become increasingly important in recent years. With rising real estate prices, rents and operating costs, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many people to afford their own home or find an affordable rental apartment. This has an impact on society and the economy and poses major challenges for politicians and decision-makers. The aim of the master's thesis was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the causes and effects of measures in order to identify solutions to the affordability problem in Tyrol and Austria.
“In a two-stage process, I conducted a total of 16 semi-structured qualitative interviews with the affected population and with professionals from the real estate industry,” says Vanessa Huber, explaining her procedure. “The results of the ten in-depth interviews with affected people from Tyrol, i.e. the population, formed the basis of an interview guide for the survey of the six experts from the Austrian real estate industry.”
The overall result of the survey and all research leads to various measures that were classified by the population and experts alike as providing relief. A mix of short and long-term measures could help to increase the affordability of housing in Austria and especially in Tyrol in the long term.
