Tamina Kugelmann, a student of Marketing & Communication Management at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, is currently spending a semester abroad in Seinäjoki, Finland. She reports on her everyday life, challenges, special highlights, and personal learning experiences.
After spending a year abroad after graduating from high school, Tamina wanted to gain more international experience during her studies. The semester at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences offers her the perfect opportunity to do so: she combines her studies, leisure activities, and cultural experiences and uses the time to actively explore Finland.
DAILY LIFE AND LEISURE
Tamina's everyday life in Seinäjoki is varied and flexible. She spends part of the day at university, but that leaves plenty of time for leisure and exploration. She goes on trips, tries out different activities, and discovers new places. Ice hockey and winter sports are just as much a part of this as visits to restaurants, cafés, and bars.
“Every day is different. You discover new places, try out activities, and get to know the country and its people better,” says Tamina, describing her everyday life. The combination of studying and leisure time allows her to experience Finland intensively and make the most of her time there.
CHALLENGES AND HIGHLIGHTS
At first, making social contacts in a new country was a challenge. However, thanks to her previous experiences abroad, Tamina found it easier to settle in. Another special feature of the Finnish winter is the short daylight hours in December, which last only around four hours and have a noticeable impact on everyday life.
Nevertheless, she experienced many special moments. She was particularly impressed by the Northern Lights, snow-covered landscapes, trips to Lapland, and encounters with reindeer. A city trip to Tallinn also gave her new cultural impressions. “Seeing the Northern Lights and experiencing the winter landscape was an experience that will remain particularly memorable for me,” she says.
CONCLUSION
Tamina draws a thoroughly positive conclusion from her semester abroad. “Just do it,” she advises other students. Living in a foreign country allowed her to get to know new cultures intensively, explore her own limits, and gather formative impressions. The semester abroad in Finland showed her how enriching it is to embrace new things and consciously expand your comfort zone.
