From the radio studio to video control: Students from the Marketing & Communications Management program went behind the scenes at ORF Tirol

Students from the Marketing & Communication Management program at FH Kufstein Tirol visited ORF Tirol as part of an excursion. The goal of the visit was to gain practical insight into the working life of a regional media company and to learn about production workflows in radio and television.

On site, the students received an overview of the broadcaster’s different departments and toured, among other facilities, the radio studio, the technical transmission station, and ORF Tirol’s television studio.

Insights into radio and television production

During the tour, ORF Tirol staff explained the processes behind an active radio or TV broadcast. They demonstrated how audio and video signals are processed and which technical steps are necessary for shows to be produced and transmitted. The students also learned about the roles and responsibilities of radio hosts and television technicians. Topics included program preparation, technical coordination in the studio, and the collaboration between editorial staff, presenters, and technical teams during a production.

“It was especially fascinating to see how many technical processes happen behind the scenes to make a radio or TV program work,” says Simon Putz.

Studio technology and green screen

Another focus of the excursion was studio technology. The students received information about how cameras, audio control, and the video control room work. They were also shown how green-screen technology is used in the TV studio and what production possibilities it enables. The tour provided a direct view of the technical implementation of media productions and complemented the theoretical content of the students’ studies with practical examples.

“It’s great that FH Kufstein Tirol organizes excursions like this as part of the curriculum, giving students direct insight into professional practice,” says Merlin Werner.

Linking theory and practice

The excursion gave students the opportunity to learn production processes and technical workflows first-hand. At the same time, it allowed them to connect academic content from their courses with practical applications from everyday media work.

Particularly revealing were the insights into how different departments within a media company cooperate, underscoring the importance of communication, organization, and technical expertise in daily production work.

Conclusion

The excursion to ORF Tirol provided practice-oriented insights into the working world of radio and television. The students learned about technical processes, production workflows, and the collaboration between different specialist areas, and were able to link theoretical study content with practical experience.
