Warm-up with presenter Julian Hameder

For the first time ever, a Unisport Austria Trail Running Championship was held in Kufstein in mid-May. In changeable weather and a festival atmosphere, 105 runners battled it out for the best times – and provided a sporting highlight that set a great example.

The Kuftrail UAM 2025 celebrated its premiere in mid-May as the first official university trail running championship under Unisport Austria. 105 participants from all over Austria and runners with open starting places took on the challenge. The race took place for two distances around Kufstein, accompanied by sun, rain, and a great atmosphere. The new sports format impressed with a successful mix of exercise in nature, competitive spirit, regional flair, and a genuine event atmosphere.

The event was organized as a practical project for the Sports, Culture, and Event Management (SKVM) program at the Kufstein University of Applied Sciences. Under the project management of Anita Hollaus and accompanied by project coach Christoph Hugl, seven students put the event together with great dedication, laying the foundation for a new university sports tradition.

The Kuftrail UAM was implemented as a green event – with a focus on environmental friendliness, regional sourcing, and accessibility. This is a strong sign that sporting events can also be planned and executed in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

University sports breaking new ground

At the first Unisport Austria Trail Running Championships, students competed in individual and team events for their higher education institutions, aiming for the best times and podium places – and all with a real trail running feel around Kufstein. Around 105 runners took on the challenge of nature, altitude, and changeable weather – including 70 participants from Austrian colleges and universities and 35 starters in the open class.

In the end, Kristina Carlson (MCI Innsbruck) and Johannes Krondorfer (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) were among those who celebrated victories in the 14 km classic distance. Hannah Sieberer (Universität Innsbruck) and Samuel Vorbach (JKU Linz) cheered on the 7 km sprint course. In the team competition, the duo Running Graz came out on top with an impressive total time of 1:50:45.62.

Presenter Julian Hameder got the runners dancing during the warm-up in the rain – until the sun finally broke through. DJ Dauerbrenner kept the mood going, while the regional food truck Bergamsl from Kössen provided everyone with the best food.

The official starting signal was given by Manfred Pfeifer, Acting Secretary General of Unisport Austria. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of sporting events such as the Kuftrail UAM for university sports.
