Wakeboarding, kitesurfing, and studying: Luna talks about her passion for water sports in an interview—and how she manages to juggle everything.
Jumps, tricks, adrenaline: Luna has been wakeboarding since she was 13—and has no intention of stopping. In episode 4 of Stories behind Students, she talks about what she loves about this action-packed sport and how she combines sports and her degree program.
Luna feels at home where others prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground: the 20-year-old is a passionate wakeboarder. She first came into contact with the sport through her father, who often rode behind a boat himself. At some point, Luna wanted to try it out for herself – and was immediately hooked. Today, she trains regularly at Area 47, her home cable park, and is an active member of the WFT Alpenkartell club. She particularly enjoys riding at the facility, which is a kind of cable car on the water: more freedom, more flow. And the feeling of finally landing a new trick after countless attempts? “Indescribable,” she says.
She's never alone: for Luna, wakeboarding is anything but an individual sport.
She has made many friends through the sport. Her coach Johannes Köck, himself a former member of the Austrian national team, accompanies her to competitions and training sessions – and pushes her to keep trying new things and master new challenges – even at championships throughout Austria.
But Luna doesn't just love wakeboarding – she's also an avid kitesurfer. “When kitesurfing, you're pulled by the wind, and when wakeboarding, you're pulled by a rope – but in both cases, you're standing on a board,” she explains. She learned kitesurfing at the sea, including in the Netherlands and the Caribbean. And when the wind doesn't blow? Then it's back to the wakeboarding facility. Pain, sore muscles, and bruises are all part of it – as is the pride of pushing through. Luna accepts that water can feel as hard as concrete at high speeds.
In addition to her passion for sports, Luna is studying Marketing and Communication Management at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol. Her path there was rather spontaneous – her brother took her to two open house events. Today she says, “Now that I'm a student myself, I like it even better.” She particularly appreciates the family atmosphere, the professors, and the proximity to nature – perfect for combining her degree program and sports.
Luna herself tells us what else she loves, what her dreams are and how she sees her future. Take a look now at the latest episode of Stories behind Students – Real-life stories.
