Numerous international FM approaches and growing demands of the FM sector have significantly influenced FM degree programs at universities in recent years. Our fast changing global FM market needs competent, responsible, dynamic and mobile Facility Management graduates. They become professionals who successfully apply their acquired knowledge in practice and at the same time dispose of the cultural and interpersonal competences to deal with the challenges of international business right from the start of their professional FM careers.

Recruitment practices of companies show that it is vital for graduates to offer more than only having gone through the regular curricula of internationally recognized FM degree programs. Therefore universities are developing international co-operations and comprehensive extra-curricular programs to give students the chance to prepare adequately for the demands of the international FM market. A Higher Learning and Problem Based Learning Matrix (including aspects like higher cognitive behavior, scientific/academic/political thinking, complexity, empathy and passion, meaning instead of reproduction, authenticity and international settings) analyzes the potential of international co-operations not only in the field of education, but also between education and business.

Internationally designed academic programs like the International Facility Management Program (extra-curricular cross-border program developed by universities of applied sciences from FIN, GER, AUT and NL) as well as the International Real Estate and Facility Professional MBA (international master’s program in cooperation with universities in NL, AUT, China and the USA) are analyzed with the Higher Learning and Problem Based Learning Matrix. The findings show that students are supported very well in acquiring the competences needed to successfully start their careers on the international FM market. Business case studies (e.g. Haskoning Nederland) are also examined according to this matrix and the results clearly demonstrate the need for students who have gained experience in international FM programs enabling them to deal with highly complex challenges in a creative as well as critical way.

These international programs and co-operations can provide win-win situations for all the stakeholders involved: universities, companies and above all students – our future FM employees!
