- Practical Project
The practical project of the ERP Systems & Business Process Management master's programme with the construction company Schaefer III. for the application of ISO 9001 certification was carried out completely online.
Students on the ERP Systems & Business Process Management master's programme developed a customised approach for the construction company Schaefer III. to implement a sustainable quality management system. The practical project was carried out entirely online.
As part of a practical project, six students on the part-time ERP Systems & Business Process Management master's programme analysed the application of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Together with the Biebesheim-based construction company Schaefer III. GmbH & Co. KG, the project group developed a well-founded GAP analysis, a high-level process map to visualise the business processes and a roadmap to ISO 9001 certification with clear action steps under the technical supervision of Dr Nico Deistler. The core content of the project also included the identification of external and internal processes using a PESTEL analysis and the provision of selected management manuals for structured implementation. To achieve this, the students conducted interviews with company employees and scrutinised internal documents.
THE PROJECT SHOWS HOW IMPORTANT A STRUCTURED AND STRATEGIC APPROACH IS FOR SUCCESSFUL ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION.

Thanks to the close cooperation with the construction company from the Rhine-Main region, the students were able to develop a customised approach that enables the sustainable implementation of the quality management system. "The project shows how important a structured and strategic approach is for successful ISO 9001 certification," says project coach and university lecturer for ERP technologies Dr Nico Deistler.
DIGITAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT
After a six-month planning and implementation phase, the final presentation took place in February 2025. This practical part of the curriculum impressively demonstrates that projects can also be successfully implemented in completely digital form - an approach that is now common practice in the consulting world. Schaefer III. is located around 500 kilometres from Kufstein and the students gave weekly updates on the progress of the project. Together with managing partner Jan Hofmann, MBA and project manager Daniel Heil, they planned the next steps and made suggestions for possible implementation.
The practical project serves as an illustrative example of how SMEs from the construction industry can implement processes and create documents in order to obtain ISO 9001 certification. The quality management standard is becoming increasingly important for companies, also in order to provide their customers with the corresponding proof. "We are very pleased that Schaefer III. will now take further steps towards complete implementation and auditing in accordance with IS9001 on the basis of the students' work," says Nico Deistler. "The work of the practical project group is therefore directly applicable and is a win-win situation for everyone involved."
