Tiny Torquer: The year everything picked up speed

In Vogtareuth during the test drive: A Tiny Torquer sits on the mini bike while the team makes the final preparations.
The Tiny Torquer team can look back on an extraordinary year: from their first event appearances, such as at Nitrolympx and Glemseck101, to rapid community growth and concrete plans for their own racing series starting in 2026. A look back at a project that rethinks technology, team spirit, and motorsport.
When the Tiny Torquer mini bikes first left the premises of the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol a little over a year ago, hardly anyone could have guessed how rapidly the project would develop. A teaching idea turned into a community. A few prototypes turned into a fleet of vehicles. And a vision turned into a movement that blurs the boundaries between studying, hobbies, and motorsports.
ON TO THE BIG STAGE: NITROLYMPX & GLEMSECK101
2025 was the year when Tiny Torquer really came into the spotlight for the first time. The test drives at Vogtareuth Airfield were one of the big highlights of the year. At Nitrolympx and the legendary Glemseck101, the team presented several homemade mini drag bikes – and was surprised by the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response.
Many visitors could hardly believe that the racing machines were built using inexpensive industrial motors costing around €100, wooden mock-ups, and recyclable steel frames. The idea of making motorsport accessible on a low budget was fascinating—and led to unexpected encounters.
Club chairman Prof. (FH) Dr. Christian Schmid, initiator of the project and professor of product development in the industrial engineering & management program, recalls one moment in particular: a brief chat about the Tiny Torquer shirt turned into a half-hour conversation in the middle of the Nitrolympx grandstand—ending with a handshake for the participation of an entire team next year. And they actually signed up.
Valuable contacts were also made in Glemseck, including an exchange with GeigerCars, which has already led to initial collaborations—including planned insights into product development for student groups.
The Tiny Torquer team presented their mini bikes at several high-profile motorsport events.
In Glemseck alone, the team held over 130 discussions with interested fans, clubs, organizers, and future participants. For many, it was clear that this low-budget racing class has a bright future.
FROM WORKSHOP TO COMMUNITY
While the Tiny Torquer first gained widespread attention at events, the project also continued to develop internally:
- Six bikes are completely ready to ride.
- Four more under construction
- An additional race car is created in a course.
- The association now has over 40 members, two-thirds of whom are students.
What makes it special is that members not only learn theory, but also experience real product development—from wooden frame mockups to manufacturing to test days at the airfield. Mistakes are part of the process and are encouraged: Fail fast and early.
The combination of technology, team spirit, and tangible successes ensures that the project attracts interested parties and students from all disciplines—from motorsport professionals to beginners who are making their first welds.
Institutional Support & New Opportunities
A decisive step in 2025 was the sponsorship agreement with the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol. Workshop space, financing, marketing support, and organizational assistance gave the project the professional foundation it needed for its next stage of growth.
With this backing, trade fair appearances, racing events, and new collaborations became possible—and the project gained visibility far beyond the university.

OUTLOOK: NOW IT'S GETTING SERIOUS
The Tiny Torquer team has clear goals for the coming years:
- Expansion of the community, more workshops, test bench development, tutorials & parts lists
- Launch of our own low-budget drag racing league with multiple classes
- Ongoing search for test and race tracks in Tyrol and the surrounding area
- Expansion of cooperation with companies and municipalities
An agreement has already been reached with organizers in Dessau: Four races are to take place next year—the start of a dedicated racing series.
THE HEART OF THE MOVEMENT: TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN TOUCH
What remains after this fast-paced year? An initiative that shows what modern teaching can look like: experiential, creative, and full of initiative. A team that combines technical passion with social interaction. And a project that opens up motorsport to people who would otherwise have no access to it.
Or as Christian Schmid puts it: “Mini bikes are the perfect development project. You can fail, learn, improve—and ultimately build something that really works.”
2025 was the year Tiny Torquer took off. 2026 will be the year they continue to accelerate.
